At first, Hollow Knight: Silksong felt almost gentle to me. Most early mobs died in a few hits, and I thought my basic needle was more than enough. Then I crossed into the third biome, and suddenly every enemy had a deeper health bar, shields, or both. What was I supposed to do when my basic attacks barely scratched them? The answer was obvious: upgrade the needle. That decision sent me on a long journey through Haunted Bellhart, Shellwood, the Citadel, and the Whispering Vaults. Even in 2026, this remains one of the most important early power spikes I can recommend.

The First Needle Upgrade and Pinmaster’s Oil Wish Location

I started by pushing toward Haunted Bellhart and Shellwood. From Shellwood, I picked up the Cling Grip ability, which opened up the path to the Widow boss fight. Beating Widow was not optional for me; it unlocked the town of Bellhart, and that town is where the first real needle upgrade waits. Once I stood near the bench, I noticed a few platforms leading upward. I took those steps, entered the second bell-shaped house, and looked for a three-pin icon on top. Inside, I met the Pinmaster. He gave me the first needle upgrade for free, then offered the Pinmaster’s Oil wish for the next one. Was I going to turn that down? Of course not.
